Churches in Goa

Churches in Goa

Goa is not only famed for its numerous sun kissed beaches and amazing natural scenery but also its plethora of religious structures that attract thousands of tourists and devotees. The contrasting lifestyle of endless partying during the night and religious ceremonies during the day is what makes Goa one of the most versatile tourist destinations on the planet.

The churches of Goa while being prominent religious destinations are also stunning examples of Indo colonial architecture.

Some of the must visit churches in Goa include:

Se Cathedral Church: Dedicated to St. Catherine, this is one of the largest cathedrals in Goa. Built during the 16th century Portuguese rule, the structure is renowned for its impeccable architecture.

Chapel of St Francis Xavier: Situated amongst verdant surroundings in Old Goa, the Chapel of St Francis Xavier was first built during the 16th century. The original structure decayed with time and a new building was built in its place during the late 19th century.

The Church Of St. Cajetan: Made from beautiful laterite blocks, the St. Cajetan church stands just a short distance from the Se Cathedral. The stunning architecture with its huge towers in front adds to the beauty of the structure.

The Church Of Our Lady Of The Rosary: The church is believed to have been built on the same spot from where Alfonso de Albuquerque witnessed the conquest of Goa. The vow that he took could however be fulfilled only after his death when the church was built in the 16th century.

Tower Of The Church Of St. Augustine: While the church, which was built during the 17th century is now mostly in ruins, what brings the tourists to the spot is a 46 m high tower that reminds the visitors of the region’s glorious past.

History of Goa

History of Goa

Goa has always been kept out of mainstream Indian history owing to its inaccessibility by land. Historical records also suggest that the region had always been one of the most lucrative options for colonial powers because of the prosperous spice trade. Before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1510, for close to a thousand years Goa was under the rule of the Kadamba kingdom.

The Jesuit Mission founded by St. Francis Xavier in 1542 hastened conversions to Christianity and was also instrumental in banning all other religions except Catholicism. But the rising influence of the Jesuits soon started to threaten the Portuguese government, who eventually expelled the Jesuits.

The region also saw a brief period of British occupation, which witnessed the liberalization of the state. A number of Goans moved to Mumbai and other parts of the country in search of work during the British rule.

A liberation march in Goa in the year 1955 resulted in a number of deaths. After repeated attempts of Goa’s liberation during the 1950s, India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru ran out of patience and sent in the Indian army. The operation saw little resistance from the Portuguese and the army was able to overrun the entire state in just two days. Goa therefore owes its freedom as much to the government of India as it does to freedom fighters like Dr. Cunha and Menezes Braganza.

After independence, Goa has become a prosperous state with a flourishing tourism industry. The culture of the state, though, has been struggling to maintain its identity as the result of huge influx of population from other Indian states.

Goa was granted the status of a full-fledged state and Konkani was declared as the official language in 1987.

Goa Cultural Dance & Music

Goa Cultural Dance & Music

Besides being a heaven of natural beauty and serenity, Goa is also a land of artistic people who are credited for lending the region with a rich cultural heritage, amalgamating the east and west perfectly. Besides the different forms of traditional dance and music, each region of the state also has its own unique form. The urban areas have also adopted western and other music forms from around the world.

Dance Forms of Goa
Goa’s traditional dances bear characteristics of its centuries old lifestyle. Dekni, a dance performed by women is an intriguing blend of traditional and contemporary music while Kunbi is a tribal dance in which women holding beautiful lamps on their heads perform intricate hand and feet movements. Morulem is another folk dance performed during the famous Shigmo festival.

The Zagor dance of the Gawda community is a type of play performed with the backdrop of lovely music. Other dance forms of Goa include the Dhangar, which is an energetic blend of dance and worship performed during the festival of Navratri. Mando is another interesting dance that represents the amalgamation of Indian and western cultures.

Music Forms of Goa
Music is an integral part of every Goa resident’s life. From the moment you wake up in the morning to the soothing sound of church bells there is music at every step of the day. The evenings are adorned with the charming sound of the Mando, a love song by the Catholics, while the festival season is brought alive by the Suvari, another form of traditional folk music that relies on an impeccable synergy of tune and beats.

Besides the traditional music forms, there is also a strong colonial influence on the Goan music. The world famous trance music of Goa is known to breeze its way straight to a person’s heart. The music originated in the 1970s in the beach parties of the hippies and has since become an inseparable part of the life in Goa.

GOA FORTS ARYAN DREAM HOLIDAYS

Goa Forts

Aguada Fort, Goa: It derives its name from several fresh water springs ("Aguada" means 'water' in Portuguese) that existed on its site. For the ships that sailed from Portugal, it was the first stop after a long journey for fresh water supplies before moving inland. On the northern side, it provides a harbour for local shipping. The fort, at present, houses the central jail. A 19th century built lighthouse is situated inside the fortress
Chapora Fort, Goa:
The fort is made of red laterite and was built by the Portuguese in 1617, on the site of an earlier Muslim structure (the name Chapora is the corruption of the word "Shahapura" or "Town of the Shah"). Since it was basically built as a border watch post, it was later deserted by the Portuguese in 1892, as the borders of its empire extended farther north (known as New Conquests). The massive ramparts and scattered Muslim tombstones are all that is left of this fort. One can still see the heads of the two tunnels, that formerly provided the supply routes for the besieged defenders.
Corjuem Fort, Goa:
This fort is situated 4km north of Pomburpa, alongside the Mapusa river near the village of Aldona. It was built in 1705 by the Portuguese. The fort has a rather interesting story. One Ursula e Lancastre, an ambitious Portuguese woman determined to succeed in a man’s world, dressed like one and traveled the world. Eventually landing up here as a soldier.
Terekhol Fort, Goa:
This fort is situated on the northern bank of the Terekhol river. It was built by the Raja of Sawantwadi and was captured by the Portuguese Viceroy, Dom Pedro de Alameida in 1746.The church and the fort were rebuilt then. It was the site of a revolt led by the first Goan born Viceroy of Goa , Dr Bernardo Peres da Silva in 1825. He used it as a base for an armed revolt against the Portuguese but this attempt was crushed by the Portuguese forces. He never returned to Goa.
Reis Magos Fort, Goa:
It is situated on the south eastern extremity of the tablel and on the right bank of the Mandovi, in the province of Bardez, about two miles to the northeast of Fort Aguada. It was constructed in 1551by the Portuguese to guard the entrance to Goa at the narrowest part of the Mandovi river, enlarged subsequently on different occasions, and finally re-erected in 1707. Though far inferior in size to the fortress of Mormugao, yet standing on an eminence, its commands, splendid view around. It is in a good state of preservation, and is defended by 33 guns and accommodation for a small garrison. Towards the east, at a little distance from it, flows a spring with abundance of excellent water, while at its base rises the church of the Reis Magos, ascended by a beautiful flight of stairs. This edifice was built on the ruins of a pagoda in 1550 by the Franciscans, with the sum allotted to them by the Government, and bears a crown on its fa ade, and the royal arms on its sanctuary and other places. The pavement is dotted with inscriptions, the most important of which, found in the sanctuary, indicated the spot enclosing the remains of Dom Luis de Ata de, count of Athoughia, who twice held the position of Viceroy of Portuguese India and Goa.

GOA Carnival ARYAN DREAM HOLIDAYS

Goa Carnival

Among the various colourful feasts and festivals feasts and festivals that Goa celebrates -with great eclat, Carnaval and Shigmo are the most rumbustious, awaited by the population with intense enthusiasm. Unlike 'Shigmo' which is also celebrated in some oilier parts of India, although under different appellations, 'Carnival Goa's own, unique, and the Union Territories contribution to India's other expressions at untrammeled revelry.

If down the centuries Carnaval was enjoyed only by the local population, today its fame has crossed the frontiers attracting thousands of people from all over India to whom this type of extravaganza is at once riotous and different.

The participation of the Goa Government and the Municipal Councils in it and the post-liberation introduction of the King Memo and his colourful procession have endowed Carnaval with a new dimenion and it is bound to attract more people every year to this territory whose scenic beauty and white-sanded benches have already earned Goa high praise.

It was in the fitness of things that the Goa Government, through its Department of Tourism, should have given a boost to the celebration of the three-day Carnival festival as a major tourist attraction. Distinctly Latin in character, a legacy of Portuguese cultural tradition, the Carnival is not celebrated elsewhere in hidhi, and it wan in decline even in Goa in the last years of Portuguese rule. Its revival and celebration with an added zest was, therefore, on the cards as, after Goa's Liberation, tourism was being developed as a regular industry. This festival of three days of gay abandon, riotous revelry and merry-making now attracts to Goa thousands of tourists from all over India.

The word Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is supposed to be derived from flu- Latin Carnelevarium or rarnem levarem, meaning "to take away meat", which actually happens at the commencement of the 40-day penitential period of fasting in commemoration of Jesus Christ's fasting in the wilderness, known among the Christians as Lent, during which abstinence from meat is a rule. The Konknni world venture, by which it is known among the illiterate masses, comes from the Portuguese intrude, in turn coming from the Latin Latin Introitum, meaning entry into the Lenten period.

Celebrated particularly in the Latin Catholic countries of Southern Europe, it appears to have originated in Italy as a substitute for the Roman pagan festival known as Saturnalia in honour of Saturn, the god of Agriculture, observed in the month of December as a period of unrestrained merry-making, as it signaled the rebirth of Mother-Nature and the beginning of a New Year. From Italy, in which country it was celebrated with éclat mainly in Rome, Venice, Florence, Naples and Turin, it spread out to other Latin countries such as France, Spain and Portugal and also to Germany and Austria. The Portuguese brought it to Goa as they also took it to Brazil. Where it is celebrated with undiminished gusto even to this day, as it is in Argentina and other Latin-American countries, where it was imported by the Spaniards, while it almost died away in Europe, except for a few places, like Nice, among others.

Brutal and city in days gone by, in Goa as in Portugal, with real street battles fought by groups of masked people armed with baskets of rotten eggs and saw-dust or wheat flour packets known as cartuchos and cocotex and syringes filled with coloured water, so much so that that there were from time to time ediets in order to curb its excesses, the Carnival festival gradually became more moderate, being of late confined to the halls of clubs and other recreation centres with balls, fancy dress parades and such other innocent pastimes.

Goa by Air: How to Reach Goa
Goa is well connected by airline services to most major cities in India. All flights, national and international, to and from Goa, operate from the Goa Airport at Dabolim near the port town of Vasco-da-Gama.

The airport is about 30 kms from the capital city of Panaji and is owned by the Indian Navy. Major airline operators such as Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines have flights carrying passengers and cargo in and out of Goa. Besides these, a number of chartered flights land in Goa from UK and other European countries. The national airline Air India also lands a few international flights, especially from the Gulf countries. Most of the local airlines have a contact phone number in the city as well as at the airport where the latest information about flight status is always available. The list of phone numbers is available in the travel services section of the website.

It is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during the high peak tourist season of October to January when most flights run full. It is also essential to re-confirm your flight timings at least 24 hours before departure.

Most major international airlines usually have agreements with one or more of their domestic counterparts in India, so if you are arriving from abroad it is possible to book your onward domestic flight at the same time as you pay for your international ticket.
Goa by Rail:How to Reach Goa
There was a time when the train journey from Mumbai took nearly twenty-four hours, on the winding route via Miraj and Pune, involving a change of trains too. Today, the high-speed Konkan Railway has a daily train which hardly takes around 8-9 hours for the same journey. Other trains between Mumbai and Panaji take typically around 10-12 hours.

The rail route also has trains which travel past Mumbai to other northern areas of India right upto Delhi as well as down south to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The Konkan Railway has special reservation facility via the internet for foreigners which allows payment to be made by credit cards. There are also computerized reservation systems in most metros.

As the demand for the rail journey is quite high and most trains run filled to capacity, it is highly advisable to reserve the tickets well in advance of your actual journey to Goa. Goa has two major railway stations — Margao and Vasco-da-Gama, both located in the southern area of the state. The South Central Railway terminus is at Vasco-da-Gama and the Konkan Railway terminus is at Margao. Besides the two main stations, the trains usually halt for a few minutes at a number of other smaller stations in Goa.

The Konkan Railway has trains which ply between Mumbai and Goa and other destinations. The latest updated schedules for these are available on the official Konkan Railway website. The South Central Railway has one train, the Nizamuddin Goa Express coming in daily in the early morning. This train departs from Delhi and comes to Goa via Pune.

The Konkan Railway undoubtedly offers the quickest and cheapest route to Goa from Mumbai. In Mumbai there are two booking offices: one is on the upper floor of the Western Railways booking office in Churchgate Station and the second is at the Central Railway booking office, at the rear of Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus or VT).

Goa by Road:
How to Reach Goa
Goa is connected with all the major towns in India via the National Highways NH4A, NH17 and NH17A. In most places along the way, the highway roads are in excellent condition and motorable at fairly good speeds.

There are bus services operating from Goa to most towns and cities in neighbouring states, such as Mumbai, Pune, Belgaum, Hubli, Bangalore, Mangalore etc. at fairly regular intervals throughout the day. These services are operated by the state owned Kadamba Transport Corporation (white and blue buses) as well as the respective transport corporations of the neighbouring states. Besides there are numerous private bus operators who provide all kinds of bus services from special to deluxe AC to sleeper coaches along these routes.

The bus services operate from the huge Kadamba bus stand at Panaji and from similar but much smaller bus stands in other Goan towns. Most buses tend to arrive in Goa in the early hours of the morning. The departures are in the early afternoon as well as early evening. The buses usually stop along the way for dinner and breakfast at roadside restaurants. Ticket charges vary from Rs 250 to Rs 650, depending upon the distance, the season, the demand and the quality of bus service. A journey to Mumbai, takes around 12-16 hours.

The tickets can be obtained through recognized travel agents or the offices of the state transport corporations. The private buses usually depart from the Fort area and make stops at a number of places around Mumbai before leaving the city.

Ensure that you have your seat and the bus registration number, and confirm the exact time and place of departure with the travel agent, as these frequently vary between companies.

The drive down from Mumbai, if you are coming by car, is along the beautiful highway which hugs the Konkan coastline, with excellent scenic beauty and typical small towns and villages along the entire route. There are a few winding and steep routes (called 'ghats') across the mountain ranges which add to the charm of the journey.

Goa by Sea:
How to Reach Goa
In the sixties and seventies, there was actually a pair of steamers which used to ply between Panaji and Mumbai, carrying loads of passengers on a charming journey along the Konkan coastline.

A catamaran service was started by Damania Shipping in 1994, between Mumbai and Goa, using a beautiful Scandinavian-built vessel, with aeroplane-style reclining seats. The trip from Mumbai used to take seven hours to reach Panaji. The catamaran too, travelled around 40 km offshore, giving travellers a glimpse of the palm-fringed Konkan coast.

The service was later taken over by another company, Frank Shipping before being closed down due to technical reasons.
A new service by Sa mlink has started in Dec. 2004 and plies thrice weekly from Mumbai to Goa.
