Travel within city


Dalhousie is hill station near the foothills of the Himalayas, and the steep roads and heavy snowfall reduce the number of vehicles that can operate on these roads. The nearest airports are at Jammu and Amritsar. They are situated approximately around 200 km away. There are taxi services available from the airport and they charge around Rs 2200 for the trip.

Taxi


The nearest railway station is at Pathankot which is around 80 km from Dalhousie. Taxi operators charge around Rs 850 for the trip.

The best option to travel around the town is to hire a car from the point of boarding and keep the vehicle for the duration of the stay. Taxi operators charge around Rs 5200 to Rs 8000 for 3 nights and four days depending on the type of vehicle.

Bus


Buses are still the main mode of transportation and they are found on the arterial roads. They are usually cheap and cost around Rs 30 from one end to another.

Horse Carriage


Dalhousie has retained some of its old world charm and the horse drawn carriages are an example of that. They are a fun way to travel short distance. They may not be very comfortable or clean. The prices are also negotiable.

Food


Several restaurant can be found on Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, open from 9 am till 10 pm. For cheap yet tasty food, there are many Punjabi dhabas located on Subhash chowk. For South Indian snacks and pipping hot tea, visit Cafe Dalhousie on Subhash Chowk. Mouth watering pizzas, burgers and sizzlers can be enjoyed at Kwality Restaurant on Gandhi Chowk. Tourists wanting to savour Indian and Chinese cuisines can head to Napoli on Garam Sadak. Alcohol is served only in the big hotels.

Shopping


Gandhi Chowk is the main shopping areas where tourists can buy bags, dolls, handicrafts, and purses. Fair priced shawls can be bought from Bhuttico and a good collection of Tibetan carpets and handicrafts can be purchased from Tibetan Handicrafts Refugee Center. Shops remain open from 10 am till 7 pm and are closed on Tuesday.

Excursions


Khajjiar - A 26 km excursion from Dalhousie, Khajjiar is a scenic hill station ringed by pines trees and thronged by holidaymakers. While in Khajjiar tourists can visit the Khajjinag Temple and Shiva temple and enjoy activities like zorbing and pony rides.

Chamba - Chamba is 56 km from Dalhousie is a charming town dominated by the palaces of the local maharajas. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy rafting, trekking, camping and kayaking. The Surara temple and Barjeshwari temple are popular attractions while shopping can be enjoyed at Rang Mahal.

Nearest airports are Pathankot which is about 80 km from Dalhousie and Jammu at a distance of 180 km from Dalhousie. Pathankot is connected to Delhi only, while Jammu has more frequent air services to Delhi and other destinations in North India. Daily Air India and Jet Airways flights are available from Delhi to Jammu and Amritsar and are economical (Rs 3,000-5,000). Taxi fare from Dalhousie-Pathankot is around Rs 1000.
