Churches in Goa

Churches in Goa

Goa is not only famed for its numerous sun kissed beaches and amazing natural scenery but also its plethora of religious structures that attract thousands of tourists and devotees. The contrasting lifestyle of endless partying during the night and religious ceremonies during the day is what makes Goa one of the most versatile tourist destinations on the planet.

The churches of Goa while being prominent religious destinations are also stunning examples of Indo colonial architecture.

Some of the must visit churches in Goa include:

Se Cathedral Church: Dedicated to St. Catherine, this is one of the largest cathedrals in Goa. Built during the 16th century Portuguese rule, the structure is renowned for its impeccable architecture.

Chapel of St Francis Xavier: Situated amongst verdant surroundings in Old Goa, the Chapel of St Francis Xavier was first built during the 16th century. The original structure decayed with time and a new building was built in its place during the late 19th century.

The Church Of St. Cajetan: Made from beautiful laterite blocks, the St. Cajetan church stands just a short distance from the Se Cathedral. The stunning architecture with its huge towers in front adds to the beauty of the structure.

The Church Of Our Lady Of The Rosary: The church is believed to have been built on the same spot from where Alfonso de Albuquerque witnessed the conquest of Goa. The vow that he took could however be fulfilled only after his death when the church was built in the 16th century.

Tower Of The Church Of St. Augustine: While the church, which was built during the 17th century is now mostly in ruins, what brings the tourists to the spot is a 46 m high tower that reminds the visitors of the region’s glorious past.
